Fluctuating freezer temperature

Inconsistent Freezer Temperature

Hi everyone,

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator with a compact freezer on top, and my model appears to be one of the following: WRT519, WRT108, WRT138, WRT148, WRT318, WRT348, or WRT549.

Recently, I checked the temperature in the fridge and found it to be within the recommended range. However, when I placed a Bluetooth thermometer in the freezer, I noticed some concerning temperature fluctuations:

The temperature dial is set one notch colder than the “recommended” setting, and I have the airflow in the freezer also set to “recommended.” These fluctuations occur at consistent intervals (as shown in the images linked above).

Is this something I should be worried about?

Thank you!

  1. Hi there!

Fluctuations in freezer temperatures can be somewhat normal, especially in older models or top-mounted freezers like yours. However, there are a few things to consider to ensure your food stays frozen safely.

    1. Thermostat Sensitivity: The thermostat can sometimes have a slight lag in reading temperatures due to its position or the way the airflow circulates. If the fluctuations are within a few degrees, it may be perfectly normal.

    2. Airflow: Ensure that there’s proper airflow in the freezer. Overloading the freezer or blocking vents can lead to uneven cooling and temperature fluctuations. Make sure there’s space for air to circulate around the items inside.

    3. Door Seal: Check the door seal for any gaps or cracks. If the door isn’t sealing well, warm air can enter and cause fluctuations.

    4. Frost Buildup: If there’s frost buildup on the evaporator coils, it might affect the temperature. Make sure the coils are clean and defrost any excess frost.

    5. Compressor Cycling: It’s normal for the compressor to cycle on and off to maintain the desired temperature. If it’s cycling too frequently or not at all, that could be an issue.

If the fluctuations are significant (more than 5-10°F) or you notice that food is not staying frozen, it might be a good idea to have a professional take a look. Otherwise, monitor it for a little while to see if it stabilizes.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any more questions.
