Seeking Mild Fish Recipes

I really don’t like fish. The only exception is canned tuna, and even then, that’s pushing it. I recently had a body composition analysis at my new gym, and let’s just say, I need to shed some of this visceral fat if I want to stick around. Our household is all about red meat, mainly because my husband grew up on a cattle farm.

I’m on the lookout for some recipes that use mild-flavored fish and can mask that fishy taste—especially since I’ll need my husband to try them too (he’s on the same health journey as I am). I can handle clam chowder (New England style only) and have had fresh, cooked mussels before, but our meals usually revolve around ground beef and chicken a couple of times a week.

In short: We’re not fish enthusiasts, but I need suggestions for super mild fish dishes I can make for myself. Any ideas? 😊

  1. I totally get where you’re coming from! It can be challenging to introduce fish into a household that isn’t used to it. Here are a few recipes and tips for using mild fish that won’t overpower your palate, and can even be disguised a bit to make them more palatable:

    1. Crispy Fish Tacos: Use cod or tilapia, which are both mild. Coat the fish in a light batter (you can even use panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch) and fry or bake until crispy. Serve in tacos with lots of toppings like cabbage slaw, avocado, and a zesty cream sauce to mask any fishy flavor.

    2. Fish Cakes: Mix canned tuna or cooked, flaked white fish (like cod) with mashed potatoes, breadcrumbs, and seasonings. Form into patties and pan-fry until golden. Serve with a dip like tartar sauce or a spicy mayo to enhance flavor.

    3. Fish Alfredo Pasta: Cook a light white fish (like sole or flounder) and flake it into creamy Alfredo sauce over pasta. The creaminess of the sauce will help mask any fishiness, plus you can add in some veggies like spinach or peas for added nutrition.

    4. Fish Foil Packets: Place a mild fish fillet in a foil packet with lemon slices, herbs (like dill or parsley), and your favorite seasonings. Bake in the oven for a flavorful, moist dish. The lemon and herbs will help keep the fish flavor subtle.

    5. Fish Curry: Use a mild fish like tilapia in a coconut milk curry. The richness of the coconut milk and the spices will mask the fish taste significantly. Serve it over rice for a fulfilling meal.

    6. Fish and Chips: Bake or fry a mild white fish coated in a light batter, and serve with a side of homemade fries or sweet potato fries. The pairing is classic and very satisfying.

    7. Mild Fish Chowder: Since you like clam chowder, try making a fish chowder with white fish, potatoes, and corn in a creamy broth. Season with herbs and spices to make it flavorful.

Don’t forget to introduce the fish slowly, and maybe use dips or sauces to help with the flavor transition. Good luck on your journey, and hopefully, your family will warm up to some fish dishes! 🐠
