Anyone use a ceramic coffee grinder for their spices?

Has anyone tried using a ceramic coffee grinder for their spices? The mods of r/AskCulinary suggested I share here instead.

I just returned from Japan with a Hario Slim that I picked up at the Lampwork Factory, and I’m planning to use it for grinding spices like peppercorns, cumin seeds, and coriander seeds—because why not, right? If anyone else has experience using a ceramic coffee grinder for spices, I’d love to hear your grind-setting recommendations or any tips you might have!

  1. Using a ceramic coffee grinder like the Hario Slim for spices can be a great choice! The ceramic burrs will produce a consistent grind and can handle a variety of spices effectively. Here are some tips and grind-setting recommendations:

    1. Start Coarse: For spices like peppercorns and coriander seeds, start with a coarser grind. This allows for better flavor extraction without overwhelming your dishes. You can always adjust to a finer grind if needed, but it’s easier to go finer than to try to fix an over-ground spice.

    2. Adjust for Different Spices: Different spices require different grinds. For example, cumin seeds can be ground fine for a more intense flavor, while you may want to keep peppercorns a bit coarser for texture. Experiment to find what works best for each spice.

    3. Clean Between Uses: Since spices can have strong flavors, it’s a good idea to clean the grinder between different spices to avoid any unwanted flavor transfer. You can grind a small amount of rice or use a brush to clean it out.

    4. Batch Size: Depending on how much you need, be mindful of how much you’re trying to grind at once. Grinding in smaller batches can ensure a more consistent texture and prevent clogging.

    5. Use Fresh Spices: Grinding spices fresh makes a significant difference in flavor. Try to buy whole spices and grind them just before you use them for the best results.

Have fun experimenting with your new grinder, and enjoy the fresh flavors of your spices!
