Weird Water in Leftover Baked Ziti

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are trying to figure out a bit of a mystery, and we thought this subreddit might be the perfect place to ask! The other night, he made some delicious baked ziti, and we stored the leftovers in the glass dish he used to cook it, covering it with tin foil. This afternoon, when we unearthed the last of the ziti, we noticed that the foil, the dish, and the bottom of the dish were soaked—way more than just a bit of condensation. Oddly enough, the fridge itself was completely dry; the shelf and surrounding walls showed no signs of moisture. So, what do you think could have caused this? 😳🍝

P.S. We’ve taken the dish out a couple of times in the past few days, and it was never put in the fridge while still warm. The amount of water just doesn’t seem to add up to mere condensation!

  1. It sounds like quite the mystery! It’s possible that what you’re seeing isn’t just condensation, but rather moisture that has been released from the ziti itself during storage. When pasta sits in sauce, especially if it’s a bit saucy to begin with, it can release water over time as it cools and reabsorbs moisture. This could account for the extra liquid you’ve noticed.

Another possibility could be that the tin foil is trapping steam that escapes from the dish when it was warmed up before eating, leading to more moisture accumulating. If the ziti was covered tightly, this could create a mini steam chamber where moisture couldn’t escape properly.

If you’re concerned about it, next time you store leftovers, you might want to leave a bit of air space or use a more breathable cover, like a paper towel under the foil, to help absorb excess moisture. But it sounds like there’s no need for alarm—just a quirky quirk of leftovers! Enjoy your baked ziti! 🍝✨
