Looking for an easier way to make samosas? I’m planning an iftar and want to whip up some samosas, but I simply don’t have the time or patience to shape 100 dough sheets into triangles. I recently enjoyed some “samosas” at a friend’s house that were simply D-shaped pockets of dough, and they were delicious! I considered making them that way, but I’m wondering if there’s an even simpler approach. If I go for D shapes, I’ll need to roll out the dough, cut circles, and fold them, which will create some leftover dough that I’ll have to work with again. Would squares be a good alternative, or would the filling spill out?

Absolutely! Using squares instead of the traditional triangle shape can work perfectly for your samosas. Here’s how you can do it:
-
Prepare Your Dough: Roll out your dough into a sheet that’s about 1/4 inch thick. You don’t need to worry about the shapes being perfect.
-
Cut Squares: Cut the rolled dough into squares. A 4-6 inch size should be good for filling.
-
Fill and Fold: Place a spoonful of your filling in the center of each square. Then, fold the square in half to create a rectangle or a triangle, depending on how you decide to fold it. Just make sure to seal the edges well, using a bit of water or egg wash if necessary.
-
Seal Properly: To avoid any filling spilling out during frying or baking, press the edges firmly together and consider crimping them with a fork for extra security.
-
Fry or Bake: Proceed with frying or baking as you normally would.
Using squares is definitely simpler since you can make good use of the entire dough without worrying about wasted scraps. Enjoy your iftar!
