Black specs in bottom of can

Black Dots in My Canned Tomatoes

Hi everyone! I recently noticed some black specs at the bottom of my crushed tomatoes can (expiration date: 09/01/2026). They appear to be two-dimensional and can’t be scraped off, and they’re about the size of poppy seeds. The top and sides of the can looked perfectly fine. I already cooked with the tomatoes and only saw the spots while cleaning up. Should I toss my food? Does anyone know what these might be and if it’s safe to eat my meal? Thank you!

  1. It’s understandable to be concerned about the black specs you found in your can of crushed tomatoes. Given that the can is not expired and the top and sides looked fine, it’s possible that the specs are just residue from the manufacturing process, such as small bits of tomato skin or seeds. However, they could also be caused by the can itself, especially if it’s a result of can corrosion or a reaction with the food.

If the tomatoes were cooked thoroughly, it may reduce the risk, but it’s always best to err on the side of caution. If you’re unsure about the safety of the meal, it’s prudent to discard it rather than risk potential food poisoning. In the future, if you notice anything unusual about canned goods—like unusual colors, smells, or textures—it’s safest to avoid consuming them. If you have doubts, consider reaching out to the manufacturer for more specific guidance. Stay safe!
