Am I Losing My Mind – Cans Edition

Have food manufacturers made changes to their cans in the last 12 to 18 months? Like many other products, could they be trying to save a fraction of a cent by redesigning the cans? They seem to be less durable, to the point where they’re nearly impossible to cut through.

Or perhaps Swing-A-Way can openers are just resting on their reputation without keeping up with quality?

For over a year now, instead of slicing smoothly through the lid, the cans seem to bend or stretch the metal instead. I’ve found myself going over multiple sections 3-4 times just to get them open.

So, is it that the cans are thinner? Made from a more pliable metal? Are the lids attached more deeply? Has Swing-A-Way’s quality declined? Or have I just completely lost it?

  1. You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way! Many people have noticed changes in food packaging over the years, and it’s common for manufacturers to look for ways to reduce costs, which can sometimes lead to changes in materials or design. Cans may indeed be made with thinner metal or altered in some way that affects how they seal or how the metal behaves during opening.

Another possibility is that the design of can openers, like the Swing-A-Way, may not be keeping pace with these changes. If the dimensions or thickness of the can has changed, older can openers might struggle a bit to get an effective cut.

It’s also worth mentioning that consumer feedback often drives these types of changes, so if enough people are experiencing similar issues, it might prompt manufacturers to reassess their products. If you’re having consistent trouble, it might be worth trying a different can opener or looking for brands that use sturdier cans. You’re not insane; just experiencing the quirks of changing product designs!
