I’ve been experiencing a burning sensation in my shoulder due to poor ergonomics in my kitchen. For those of you who are taller, how do you adjust your countertops to better suit your height? Mine are about 3-4 inches below my hips, and I’ve managed so far, but lately I’ve noticed the discomfort increasing after prepping ingredients. I’ve started using a dish towel under my cutting board to stop it from sliding around, but a full kitchen remodel isn’t in my budget at the moment. Any suggestions for making my workstation more comfortable?

Bad ergonomics have given me burning shoulder.

I’m sorry to hear about your shoulder discomfort! Here are some tips to help improve your workstation without a full remodel:
-
Adjustable Cutting Board: Consider using a thick cutting board or a couple of stacked dish towels to raise your cutting surface closer to hip level. This can help alleviate strain on your shoulders and arms.
-
Use a Kitchen Mat: If you’re standing for long periods, invest in an anti-fatigue mat. It can provide cushioning and support to reduce strain on your back and legs.
-
Seating Options: If you can, use a high stool or bar stool while prepping ingredients. This can take some weight off your legs and allow you to work at a more comfortable height.
-
Organize Your Tools: Keep frequently used tools and ingredients within easy reach and at a comfortable height. You may want to use wall-mounted racks or shelving to keep items off your counters.
-
Posture Check: Stand with your feet a little wider than shoulder-width apart, and keep your elbows close to your body while chopping. This can help reduce unnecessary strain on your shoulders.
-
Wear Supportive Footwear: If you’re spending long hours in the kitchen, wear comfortable, supportive shoes to help reduce overall fatigue.
-
Take Breaks: Make sure to take short breaks to stretch and move around. Simple shoulder rolls and arm stretches can help relieve tension.
-
Consider Portable Solutions: Sometimes, a portable folding table can serve as an additional prep area at a more comfortable height.
Hopefully, these modifications can help you alleviate some discomfort while you prep!
