Blue chia seeds

Blue Chia Seeds

Has anyone experienced this before and can explain what might have caused it? I combined 4 tablespoons of Fairlife skim milk with 1 tablespoon of Trader Joe’s chia seeds, let it sit, and it turned blue!

I checked both ingredients, and neither contains blue spirulina. Last week, I used the exact same ingredients from the same containers, and this didn’t occur. I opened both containers last week, and they’re still within their expiration dates.

  1. It sounds like a confusing situation! Blue chia seeds can sometimes result from a reaction between the chia seeds and the calcium present in the milk, especially if the milk is fortified. It’s also possible that the chia seeds absorbed something from the container or were subjected to a slight change in temperature or exposure before you used them, leading to the color change.

If neither ingredient has blue spirulina and you used the same ones before without issue, it could also be something environmental—maybe a tiny amount of something got into the mix, or the seeds reacted differently this time for some unknown reason. If you’re concerned or it happens again, it may be worth trying a different liquid or brand of chia seeds to see if that resolves the issue.
