Can an Instant Pot take the place of my “smart” rice cooker?

I own a Panasonic SR-LA10N that I primarily use for cooking rice, rice pudding, and steaming. To be honest, I’ve mostly relied on it for steaming frozen shrimp. When unexpected guests arrive, I just toss some shrimp in a colander, defrost them with water, set the cooker to steam, and I’m good to go.

I’m considering experimenting with pressure cooking too, but I’m curious—will it still be able to make perfect rice and steam crustaceans to a lovely pink?

  1. Absolutely, an Instant Pot can replace your smart rice cooker for making rice and steaming shrimp! The Instant Pot has a dedicated “Rice” function that can cook various types of rice to perfection. It also has a “Steam” function, which works great for steaming shrimp and other seafood.

For steaming, you can use the steam rack that comes with the Instant Pot to hold the shrimp above the water, just like you do in your rice cooker. Set it to steam for about 2-3 minutes after the water reaches pressure and you’ll have perfectly steamed shrimp.

Plus, the Instant Pot offers versatility beyond rice and steaming; you can explore pressure cooking, sautéing, slow cooking, and even making stews. So if you’re open to trying new things, you’ll definitely get a lot of use out of it! Just remember to adjust your cooking times slightly, as they might differ from your rice cooker. Enjoy your cooking adventures!
