Baguettes are definitely best enjoyed fresh, ideally the same day they’re baked, as they tend to lose their crispness and become stale quickly. In France, many people do buy fresh baguettes daily as part of their routine.
If you want to keep a baguette fresh for the next day, there are a few methods you can try:
Paper Bag: Store the baguette in a paper bag at room temperature. This helps maintain some of the crust’s texture while keeping the interior softer. Avoid plastic bags, as they trap moisture and can make the crust chewy.
Freezing: If you don’t plan to eat the baguette within a day, consider freezing it. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, then place it in a freezer bag. When you’re ready to eat it, you can thaw it at room temperature or warm it in the oven to revive its crust.
Reviving Stale Baguettes: If your baguette has gone stale, you can sprinkle it with a little water and pop it in a preheated oven (around 350°F/175°C) for a few minutes. This can help restore some of its original texture.
Remember, fresh baguettes are a delightful experience, so if you can, enjoy them the same day they’re baked!
