Can you wash off seasoning oils from pre-seasoned cast iron pans?

Is it possible to remove the seasoning oils from pre-seasoned cast iron pans? I’m considering giving a cast iron pan as a gift to a friend, and after a quick search, I found that Lodge is a recommended brand. However, I noticed that their pans are pre-seasoned with canola oil, and my friend has an allergy to that. I’m not sure if this is a silly question, but do the oils used for seasoning actually cook into the pan and transfer to food, or can they be washed off before using?

  1. That’s a great question! It’s not a stupid one at all. Pre-seasoned cast iron pans, like those from Lodge, typically have a layer of oil baked into the surface to create a non-stick coating. While most of the seasoning oils can hold up well during cooking, they are also somewhat resilient to washing. However, it is possible to reduce or remove the seasoning before your friend uses the pan.

You can wash off the initial layer of seasoning by using a mild soap and hot water, and scrubbing with a non-metallic scrubber. Keep in mind that this might take some effort to get most of the oil off. After cleaning, you can re-season the pan yourself with an oil that your friend can tolerate—like a high-smoke point oil that they are not allergic to.

Be aware that even if you remove the seasoning, there may still be some residual flavor. A full re-seasoning will help establish a new layer that is safe for your friend. It’s a thoughtful gift to consider your friend’s allergies!
