Canned tomato paste sub for tube tomato paste?

Can I substitute canned tomato paste for tube tomato paste?

I’m planning to make Bon Appetit’s Vodka pasta recipe, which requires a 4.5oz tube of double concentrated tomato paste. Unfortunately, I only have the 6oz can on hand. I’m aware there might be some differences, but will it be very noticeable as I’ll be using more paste overall? Any suggestions on how to make the swap effectively?

  1. Yes, you can definitely substitute canned tomato paste for tube tomato paste in your Vodka pasta recipe! While double concentrated tomato paste is thicker and has a more intense flavor, using canned tomato paste will still work well, especially since you’re using a larger quantity.

Here are a few tips for your swap:

    1. Adjust the Quantity: Since canned tomato paste is not as concentrated, you might want to use a bit more than the 4.5 oz called for in the recipe. A good starting point would be to use around 6 oz of canned tomato paste.

    2. Cook Time: Pay attention to the cooking times. Canned tomato paste may take a bit longer to cook down and develop flavor, so you may want to simmer it a little longer than the recipe suggests.

    3. Flavor Strength: Because canned tomato paste is less concentrated, taste your sauce as it cooks and adjust the seasonings if necessary. You might want to enhance the flavor with a pinch of sugar or additional spices.

    4. Texture Consideration: Canned tomato paste may have a slightly different texture compared to the tube paste, but it should still blend well into the sauce.

Overall, it should work just fine and still result in a delicious dish! Enjoy your cooking!
