Chicken defrosting for 10 hours

Chicken Defrosting for 10 Hours
Hey everyone,

I accidentally left some frozen chicken out to defrost for 10 hours. I cooked it, but I’m wondering if it’s safe to eat. I also prepared some steak beforehand because I was a bit worried. Just wanted to get some thoughts on this! I didn’t want to waste the chicken 🙄.

  1. Hi there!

If the chicken was left out at room temperature for 10 hours, it may not be safe to eat. The USDA recommends that raw chicken should not be left out for more than 2 hours at room temperature, as bacteria can grow rapidly between 40°F and 140°F.

Even though you cooked it, the risk of foodborne illness increases when food is left out for a long period. If the chicken looks, smells, and tastes normal, you might feel inclined to eat it, but it’s really best to err on the side of caution. If you experience any symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after eating it, reach out to a healthcare professional.

In the future, consider defrosting chicken in the refrigerator, in cold water, or using a microwave to keep it safe. Stay safe!
