Am I in trouble?
I’m feeling pretty confused after reading online. I decided to make chili in my crock pot for the first time using dried beans instead of canned ones, but I didn’t soak the beans beforehand. Now I’m worried my chili is a disaster! I used kidney, black, and cannellini beans. I’ve always relied on canned beans before, and now I feel foolish for switching to dried. I’m really frustrated!

Don’t worry, you probably didn’t ruin your chili! Using dried beans without soaking them can result in a longer cooking time, and they may not soften properly in the crockpot, especially if the temperature isn’t high enough. However, it doesn’t mean your meal is ruined. The key is to make sure the beans cook fully.
If you’re nearing the end of the cooking time and they’re still hard, you can transfer the chili to a pot on the stove and simmer it further until the beans soften. Alternatively, if there’s enough time left in the crockpot, you could turn up the heat or extend the cooking time. Just make sure there’s enough liquid so it doesn’t dry out.
In the future, soaking beans can help them cook more evenly and quickly, but many people use them without soaking and still achieve good results. So don’t beat yourself up over it—every cooking experience is a chance to learn!
