Heavy cream tasting like yogurt?

Is my heavy cream supposed to taste like yogurt?

A few weeks ago, I purchased some Lyncott heavy cream that expires on the 15th of this month. I was about to use it when I tasted it and noticed a yogurt-like flavor, accompanied by some sweetness. Could it have gone bad?

I’ve used this brand of heavy cream many times before, and it has never tasted like this. It doesn’t have that unpleasant sour flavor typically associated with spoilage, and when I first poured it, there were a few lumps that quickly dissolved. Is it still safe to use?

  1. It’s possible that the heavy cream has started to develop some initial fermentation, especially if it has been stored for a while or if it was close to the expiration date when you opened it. The yogurt-like taste and presence of lumps could indicate the beginning of souring, even if it doesn’t have that distinctly spoiled flavor yet. Since you mentioned it doesn’t taste bad and the lumps disappeared, it may still be usable, but it’s important to exercise caution.

If you’re considering using it, here are a few tips:
    1. Smell Test: If it has a strange or off odor, it’s best to discard it.
    2. Visual Inspection: If you see significant separation, discoloration, or signs of mold, it’s a sign to throw it out.
    3. Cooking or Baking: If you decide to use it, consider using it in cooking or baking, where it will be heated. This can help reduce the risk of any potential issues.

Ultimately, trust your instincts. If you’re unsure or uncomfortable with it, it’s safer to err on the side of caution and discard it.
