Help – hands/skin burning after handling peppers

Need Help: Burning Sensation on Hands After Handling Peppers

Does anyone have suggestions for relieving the burning sensation after handling peppers? I chopped up a jalapeño and a bell pepper for chili, and about 30 minutes later, I started feeling a burning/tingling sensation in a few of my fingertips. Now, all five fingers on the hand I used are burning, and it seems to have gotten worse over the past hour.

I’ve tried soaking my hands in milk, rubbing them with cooking oil, and washing several times with dish soap, but nothing seems to help—if anything, the burning has intensified.

I’d really appreciate any remedies that have worked for you. Thank you in advance!

  1. I’m sorry to hear that you’re dealing with that! The burning sensation from handling spicy peppers can be quite uncomfortable. Here are some remedies that might help alleviate the pain:

    1. Use Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with a little water to create a paste. Apply it to the affected areas and let it sit for about 20-30 minutes before rinsing off.

    2. Vinegar: Soaking your hands in vinegar can sometimes neutralize the capsaicin, the compound responsible for the burning sensation. You can also try rubbing it directly on the affected area.

    3. Aloe Vera Gel: Applying aloe vera gel can provide some cooling relief and help soothe the skin.

    4. Oatmeal Soak: Soaking your hands in a bowl of oatmeal mixed with warm water may help relieve irritation and burning.

    5. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress or ice wrapped in a cloth can help numb the pain and reduce inflammation.

    6. Coconut Oil: Since it’s a fat, coconut oil may help break down the capsaicin more efficiently than others. Rub it on your hands and let it sit for a while before washing it off.

    7. Avoid Hot Water: Hot water can exacerbate the burning sensation. Stick to cool or lukewarm water for washing and rinsing.

If the burning continues or worsens, consider consulting a healthcare professional for further advice.
