How long can ground beef stay frozen?

How long can ground beef be safely frozen?

Just for context, I had some grass-fed burgers made from ground beef that I froze back in November and cooked today after thawing. Unfortunately, my stomach started acting up, and I ended up vomiting, which I suspect might be due to food poisoning. I also had fresh cheese tortellini and air-fried sweet potato fries.

Do you think the ground beef was the culprit? What are your thoughts?

  1. Ground beef can generally be frozen for about 3 to 4 months without significant loss of quality, but it can remain safe to eat beyond that time frame if it has been stored properly at 0°F (-18°C) or lower. Grass-fed beef doesn’t necessarily change the freezing or safety duration, but it may have different flavor profiles.

If your ground beef had been frozen since November, it was likely still safe to eat, but the quality might have diminished depending on how it was packaged and stored. Food poisoning can happen due to improper handling or cooking, so if the beef was thawed and cooked incorrectly or had been exposed to bacteria before freezing, that could be a potential cause.

However, your symptoms could also stem from the other foods you ate, particularly if they weren’t stored or cooked properly. If you suspect food poisoning, it’s important to stay hydrated and consider consulting a healthcare professional, especially if symptoms persist. If this happens frequently, it might be worth re-evaluating food storage and cooking practices.
