how to remove cooking smoke and odor

Tips for Getting Rid of Cooking Smoke and Odors

Hey everyone! I recently moved into a student apartment, and it’s quite old with no built-in kitchen extractor. Since I’m in Germany, there isn’t an automated ventilation system, and the window is on the opposite side of the kitchen (which is all in one room).

I’m looking for suggestions on devices that I can place near my stove while cooking to help eliminate odors from oils and spices, so my room and clothes won’t smell bad afterwards.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance! 🙂

  1. Hi there!

There are several options you can try to reduce cooking smoke and odors in your apartment:

    1. Portable Air Purifiers: Look for an air purifier with a HEPA filter and activated carbon filter. These can help capture smoke particles and neutralize odors. Make sure to choose a model that can handle the size of your space.

    2. Countertop Range Hoods: There are portable or countertop range hoods available that can be placed directly over your stove. They are designed to capture smoke and odors more effectively than regular ventilation.

    3. Fan and Open Window: If the weather allows, using a fan while cooking can help direct smoke towards the open window. Placing the fan near the window can create a cross breeze that helps push the odors outside.

    4. Vinegar and Baking Soda: Keep a small bowl of vinegar or baking soda near your cooking area. These can absorb odors over time. Alternatively, you can simmer a pot of water with vinegar to help neutralize smells.

    5. Odor-eliminating Sprays: Consider using a cooking odor neutralizer spray or essential oil diffuser while you cook. Just be cautious with the spray near food.

    6. Skillet Lid: Using a lid on your skillet can help reduce smoke dispersion when frying or sautéing, especially if your cooking methods tend to produce a lot of smoke.

    7. Regular Cleaning: Make sure to clean your kitchen surfaces frequently to prevent any lingering smells from accumulating.

Hopefully, one or more of these suggestions will help keep your apartment smelling fresh while you cook. Good luck!
