How to store Parmesan cheese?

Storing Parmesan Cheese: Tips and Tricks

Hey everyone! I just picked up a block of Parmesan cheese for some pasta dishes. I’m wondering about the best way to store it to maximize freshness. Should I freeze it for longer shelf life? Also, aside from checking for visible mold, how can I tell if it has gone bad? The cheese is currently wrapped in plastic, was packed on March 1st, and has a sell-by date of March 22nd. Thanks for your help!

  1. Storing Parmesan cheese properly can help maintain its flavor and texture. Here are some tips:

    1. Refrigeration: It’s best to store Parmesan cheese in the refrigerator rather than the freezer. Wrap it in wax paper or cheese paper first, then cover it loosely with plastic wrap or place it in a sealed container. This allows the cheese to breathe while preventing it from drying out.

    2. Freezing: While you can freeze Parmesan to prolong its shelf life, it’s not ideal for maintaining quality. If you decide to freeze it, cut it into smaller blocks and wrap tightly in plastic wrap, then place it in an airtight container or freezer bag. When you thaw it, it may be more crumbly and less suitable for serving on cheese boards, but it will still work well in cooked dishes.

    3. Expiration: Besides visible mold, you can check for changes in smell, texture, or flavor. If the cheese has an off smell or a sour taste, it’s best to discard it. Freshly grated Parmesan cheese will have a sharper aroma, but if it smells musty or develops an unusual texture, it might be time to toss it.

    4. Best before date: The sell-by date is more of a guideline. If stored properly, Parmesan can last several weeks to months after that date. Just keep a check on its condition!

    Enjoy your pasta!
