I recently got a Xiaomi rice cooker after hearing so many great recommendations. However, I’m still struggling to achieve that perfect rice! I’ve experimented with short grain, jasmine, and basmati rice, trying a variety of methods—I’ve cooked them unwashed, washed (until the water ran clear), and soaked for 5–10 minutes. Despite following the recommended rice-to-water ratios, the rice consistently turns out mushy and doesn’t quite match the texture you find in Japanese restaurants. I’ve even tried reducing the water, but the results are the same. What am I doing wrong? Should I add something to the water, like butter? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you’re really putting in the effort to get the rice just right! Here are a few tips that might help you achieve that perfect texture:
-
Water Ratio: Different types of rice require different water-to-rice ratios. For example, short grain rice typically needs about 1:1.2 or 1:1.5 (rice to water), while basmati usually needs about 1:1.5. Make sure you’re adjusting the ratio based on the type of rice you’re using.
-
Soaking: While soaking can help improve texture, try soaking basmati for at least 30 minutes to an hour. Short grain rice doesn’t need as much soaking time—10-20 minutes is usually enough.
-
Rice Type: Using high-quality rice can also make a big difference. Sometimes the brand can affect how the rice cooks, so you might experiment with a different brand or source.
-
Cooking Settings: Check the settings on your rice cooker. Some cookers have different modes for different types of rice. Make sure you’re selecting the correct one for the rice you’re cooking.
-
Let it Rest: After your rice is done cooking, let it rest for about 10-15 minutes with the lid on. This helps the steam redistribute and can lead to a better texture.
-
Butter or Oil: Adding a little butter or oil can enhance flavor and may help with the texture, but it’s typically not necessary for the cooking process itself.
-
Stirring: Avoid stirring the rice too much before cooking, as it can release excess starch and lead to mushiness.
Experiment with these tips, and don’t give up! Perfecting rice can take some time, but you’ll get there. Happy cooking!
