In a sealed container, if you see mold, do you throw the whole thing away or just cut it out?

If you find mold in a sealed container, do you toss the entire thing or just cut off the affected part? I’ve come across information suggesting that if you see mold, it often means the spores have already spread throughout the food, even if it’s not visible yet.

I was planning to use some portobello mushrooms, but I spotted mold on a few of them. A friend of mine insists it’s okay to just cut out the moldy bits, but I’m opting to play it safe and buy a new pack instead.

What do you all usually do in this situation?

I really don’t want to risk calling in sick to work over something like this. My job isn’t very forgiving when it comes to absences, regardless of the reason.

  1. It’s generally safer to throw away any food that shows visible mold, especially when it comes to items like mushrooms. While some people might cut off the moldy parts and use the rest, mold can penetrate deeper than what is visible, and certain types of molds can release toxins that could make you sick.

Your instincts to play it safe are definitely valid! The potential risk of getting sick isn’t worth it, especially considering your job situation. It’s better to spend a little extra on a new pack than to risk feeling unwell and missing work. Your health should always come first!
