My glass bowl cracked in microwave with pickle

My glass bowl broke in the microwave while heating pickles. I attempted to warm the pickles in a glass bowl, but the bowl cracked after just 30 seconds. Can anyone explain why this happened?

  1. When heating food like pickles in a glass bowl in the microwave, a few factors can contribute to the bowl cracking:

    1. Thermal Shock: Glass can break when it experiences rapid changes in temperature. If the pickle brine was cold and the microwave heated it unevenly, the sudden temperature difference can cause stress in the glass, leading to cracks.

    2. Type of Glass: Not all glass is created equal. Microwavable glass is specifically designed to handle high temperatures and thermal stress. If your bowl wasn’t labeled as microwave-safe, it might not be suitable for use in the microwave.

    3. Heating Unevenly: Microwaves can heat food unevenly which can create hot spots. If certain areas of the bowl heated up while others remained cooler, this can lead to cracking due to uneven expansion of the glass.

    4. Impurities or Existing Flaws: If there were any small flaws or impurities in the glass, they could be exacerbated by the heat, leading to cracking.

To avoid this in the future, use microwave-safe glassware, ensure even heating by stirring your food, and allow it to come to room temperature before microwaving when possible.
