Non-tomato replacement for tomato paste in stir-fry?

Looking for a tomato-free substitute for tomato paste in a stir-fry. I have to avoid tomatoes for five days due to a medical test, plus the day of the test. I just prepped ingredients for a quick stir-fry that I planned to eat over the next few days, only to discover it has tomato paste in it. I don’t want to change my meal plans at the last minute. Any suggestions for alternatives? The stir-fry includes soy sauce and sriracha. I’m considering using tamarind paste or kecap manis as a replacement. Any other recommendations?

Edit: Just to clarify, I only need a tablespoon for four servings, so it’s a small amount. I’m currently in Germany, so I can’t access US products.

  1. You have a few good options for replacing tomato paste in your stir-fry! Since you’re using soy sauce and sriracha, here are some suggestions:

    1. Tamarind Paste: As you mentioned, tamarind paste can add a nice sour and slightly sweet flavor, which can work well in your dish.

    2. Kecap Manis: This sweet soy sauce would also be a great substitute, adding both sweetness and depth of flavor.

    3. Red Miso Paste: If you have it on hand, red miso can provide umami and a bit of richness without the tomato flavor.

    4. Carrot or Beet Puree: Blending cooked carrots or beets can create a sweet, earthy flavor that could mimic the texture of tomato paste.

    5. Pumpkin or Sweet Potato Puree: A small amount of either could provide a similar texture and sweetness.

    6. Soy Sauce and Sugar Mixture: Mixing a tablespoon of soy sauce with a little bit of sugar can also stand in for tomato paste, offering a sweet-savory balance.

Since it’s just a tablespoon for 4 servings, even mixing one or two of these options could give you the flavor and texture you need without tomatoes. Enjoy your stir-fry!
