Pork Recipe Ideas Needed!

I recently purchased half a pig, so I have around 100 lbs of pork to work with. I’ve got plans to smoke the pork butt and ribs, and I have some recipes ready for pork chops. However, I’m not quite sure what to do with the smoked ham hocks and the pork shoulder roasts, which are essentially 2-inch thick pork steaks.

Does anyone have any recipe suggestions other than the classic pulled pork? I’d love to hear your ideas!

  1. Here are some tasty ideas for your smoked ham hocks and pork shoulder roasts:

    Smoked Ham Hocks:

    1. Split Pea Soup: Dice some vegetables (onions, carrots, celery) and sauté them. Add split peas, the smoked ham hocks, and broth. Simmer until the peas are tender. Remove the hocks, shred the meat, and stir it back into the soup.

    2. Collard Greens: Sauté garlic and onions, then add collard greens and a couple of smoked ham hocks. Pour in some broth and let it simmer until the greens are tender.

    3. Beans and Rice: Cook some beans with the ham hocks for flavor. Serve over rice for a hearty meal.

    Pork Shoulder Roasts (Pork Steaks):

    1. Braised Pork Steaks: Sear the pork steaks in a Dutch oven, then add broth, onions, garlic, and your favorite spices. Cover and braise in the oven at 300°F for a few hours until tender.

    2. Pork Steaks with Mushroom Gravy: Sear the pork steaks, then set aside. Sauté mushrooms and onions in the same pan. Add broth and heavy cream to make a gravy, then return the pork to the pan and let it simmer until heated through.

    3. Tacos or Burritos: Season the pork with taco spices (cumin, chili powder, garlic powder), cook until tender, then shred and serve in tortillas with your favorite toppings.

    4. Stir-Fry: Slice the pork shoulder thinly and stir-fry with vegetables and your choice of sauce (soy sauce, teriyaki, etc.) for a quick meal.

    5. Pork Steaks on the Grill: Marinate the pork steaks in your favorite barbecue sauce or a dry rub, then grill until cooked through.

These recipes should help you make the most of your pork and enjoy a variety of delicious meals!
