Shaoxing wine substitute

Looking for a Shaoxing Wine Substitute

Hey everyone! I’m in need of some advice. I’m making a beef and broccoli dish and don’t have any shaoxing wine on hand. Could anyone recommend a suitable substitute? I do have ginger cooking wine and rice cooking wine (Michiu), but I’m not sure if they would work. I’d really appreciate any suggestions! 🙏

Edit: I realize my wording may have caused some confusion. The recipe doesn’t state that the wine is absolutely necessary; I just phrased it that way! Sorry for any misunderstanding! 😅

  1. No problem! If you don’t have shaoxing wine, ginger cooking wine and rice cooking wine (mirin) can be decent substitutes in a pinch.

Here are a few options to consider:

    1. Ginger Cooking Wine: This can work well since it has a bit of a similar flavor profile. Just use a little, as it might be stronger in taste.

    2. Rice Cooking Wine (Mirin): This is sweeter than shaoxing wine, but it can still provide a nice flavor. You might want to reduce any additional sugar in your recipe to balance it out.

    3. Dry Sherry: If you have it, dry sherry is a great substitute that can mimic the flavor of shaoxing wine.

    4. Homemade Mixture: You can mix a little rice vinegar with some sugar and water to replicate the sweetness and acidity of shaoxing wine.

    5. White Wine or Cooking Sherry: These can also work, but they may change the flavor slightly.

Just remember to adjust the quantity to suit your taste, and enjoy your beef and broccoli! 🍜
