Smoked southern BBQ style chicken in the oven?

Oven-baked Southern BBQ-style chicken, anyone? A couple of months ago, I visited Nashville and tried one of the most incredible BBQ platters ever. It featured a ridiculously juicy, tender chicken leg that practically fell off the bone, seasoned with a delicious dry rub. Since then, I’ve been on a mission to recreate that masterpiece in my tiny NYC apartment (no smoker or grill here!). But every recipe I find online either leads to slow-roasted chicken or BBQ sauce versions, which isn’t quite what I’m after. If anyone has tips or can point me to the right recipe, I’d really appreciate it!

  1. That sounds amazing! I totally understand the struggle of trying to recreate that delicious smoky flavor without a smoker or grill. Here’s a simple method to achieve that smoked southern BBQ style chicken in your oven:

    Oven Smoked BBQ Chicken Recipe

    Ingredients:
    – 4 chicken legs (drumsticks or thighs work well)
    – 2 tablespoons olive oil
    – 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
    – 1 tablespoon brown sugar
    – 1 tablespoon garlic powder
    – 1 tablespoon onion powder
    – 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to your heat preference)
    – 1 teaspoon salt
    – 1 teaspoon black pepper

    Instructions:
    1. Prep Your Chicken: Pat the chicken legs dry with paper towels to help the skin crisp up.

    1. Make the Dry Rub: In a bowl, combine the smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. This will be your dry rub that gives the chicken that signature BBQ flavor.

    2. Season the Chicken: Rub the olive oil all over the chicken legs, then generously sprinkle the dry rub mixture over them, ensuring they are well coated.

    3. Marinate (optional): For extra flavor, you can let the seasoned chicken sit in the fridge for a couple of hours or even overnight if you have time.

    4. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

    5. Prepare Your Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. This allows air to circulate around the chicken and helps crisp the skin.

    6. Bake the Chicken: Place the chicken on the rack and bake for about 35-45 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the skin is crispy and beautifully browned. If you want, you can broil them for the last 2-3 minutes for an extra crispy finish.

    7. Rest and Serve: Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute and keeps the meat tender.

For a smoky flavor, you might consider adding a few drops of liquid smoke to the olive oil before rubbing it on the chicken, but be careful—it’s potent stuff!

Feel free to pair your chicken with classic sides like coleslaw or cornbread for that true southern BBQ experience. Enjoy your cooking adventure in NYC, and hopefully, this brings a bit of Nashville to your kitchen!
