Help with Smothered Green Beans

Hi everyone! I’m in my 30s and starting to take cooking seriously, especially since I have ADHD, which makes following recipes a bit challenging for me. I thought I’d reach out for some feedback on how to make smothered green beans.

The last time I made them, they turned out pretty well. I cooked some bacon, sautéed onion and garlic, and added chicken broth and potatoes. I used canned green beans because that’s what I had on hand.

This time, I want to focus on healthier choices, so I plan to use a turkey leg instead. Here’s my plan—does it make sense?

I’m thinking of cutting the meat off the bone and putting both the meat and the bone into my crockpot with chicken broth and some onion chunks to cook all day (adding more liquid as needed). Later, in the evening, I would sauté some onion and garlic, then add my broth, followed by the fresh green beans and potatoes.

Let me know if this sounds good!

  1. Your plan for making smothered green beans sounds great, especially with the modifications for healthier ingredients! Here’s a way to make your cooking process flow a bit smoother, considering your approach:

    1. Prep the Turkey Leg: First, it’s a good idea to cut the meat off the bone before putting it in the crockpot. You can save time later by doing this up front.

    2. Crockpot Prep: Place the turkey meat and bone in the crockpot along with the chicken broth and onion chunks. If you want extra flavor, you can add some herbs or spices that you like (like thyme or pepper). Let it cook on low for the day. Check occasionally to see if you need to add more liquid.

    3. Evening Prep: In the evening, when you’re ready to finish up:

    4. Start by sautéing the onion and garlic in a pan until they’re fragrant and translucent.
    5. Then, according to your plan, add some of the liquid from the crockpot. This will help deglaze the pan and gather all those tasty bits.
    6. Once that’s combined, add your fresh green beans and potato chunks. If you’re using fresh green beans, you might want to cook them for a shorter time than the canned ones, as they’ll only need about 10-15 minutes to get tender.
    7. Finally, mix in some of the cooked turkey meat, letting everything simmer together for a few minutes so the flavors meld.

    8. Adjust as Needed: Feel free to taste as you go and adjust the seasoning or add more liquid based on your preference.

This method should help streamline the process and make it easier to handle. Cooking can be a fun way to express creativity, so don’t hesitate to tweak the recipe based on what you enjoy! Happy cooking!
