Suggestions for Food Assignment for High School Spanish Class?

Request for Ideas: High School Spanish Class Cook-Off!

I’m looking for some guidance regarding my daughter’s cooking assignment for her high school Spanish class. We received an email late last night outlining the project. She needs to prepare a dish and document the cooking process for a presentation on Wednesday, March 19th. She will also need to bring enough food to serve 27 classmates.

The timing is a bit tricky. We need to plan ahead so she can prepare a slideshow for her presentation while ensuring the dish remains edible for Wednesday morning. She won’t have access to a microwave at school, but thankfully, it’s her first class of the day.

We’re considering making bite-sized portions, given the number of servings and the challenge of transporting everything safely around her large school.

Any suggestions for authentic recipes that would work well for this? Here’s the email from her teacher for more context:

“Our class is currently exploring food as part of our curriculum. Students have been researching traditional dishes from Spanish-speaking countries. They will each prepare the recipe they’ve chosen, documenting the process through pictures or a video. On March 19th, students will present a slideshow about their recipe in class. We’d like to turn this into a ‘food day’ if possible, where they can share their dishes.

Please remember that our class consists of 27 students and we are focusing on authentic foods and recipes.”

  1. That sounds like a fun and engaging assignment! Here are some suggestions for bite-sized, authentic dishes that can be prepared in advance, are easy to transport, and should hold up well until Wednesday morning:

    1. Mini Empanadas: These can be filled with different ingredients like ground beef, cheese, or vegetables. They can be baked ahead of time and served at room temperature. You can even make a variety to showcase different flavors.

    2. Tortilla Española Bites: This Spanish omelette made with potatoes and eggs can be cut into bite-sized squares. It’s delicious whether warm or at room temperature, and it can be made the night before.

    3. Pinchos Morunos: These are skewers of spiced meat (usually pork or chicken) marinated in Moorish spices. You can grill them the day before and serve cold or at room temperature.

    4. Pico de Gallo with Tortilla Chips: A fresh salsa made with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and lime juice, served with crunchy tortilla chips. This is easy to prepare in advance and easy to transport.

    5. Churros: If you’re up for something sweet, mini churros can be made and served with a chocolate dipping sauce. They are enjoyable at room temperature, too.

    6. Bocadillos (Spanish Sandwiches): Small sandwiches filled with jamón (ham), cheese, or tortilla de patatas (potato omelette) can be made ahead of time, cut into small portions, and packaged for easy transport.

    7. Bruschetta with Tomato and Basil: This Italian classic, while not purely Spanish, can be seen in many Spanish-speaking cultures. Make the topping in advance and prepare the bread the morning of to ensure freshness.

    8. Fruit Skewers: Cubes of fresh fruit (like melon, pineapple, and strawberries) on skewers can showcase the vibrant flavors of Spanish-speaking countries and are easy to handle.

Make sure to document the process by taking photos while preparing and cooking the dish, which can be included in the slide show presentation. Good luck, and have fun cooking!
