Suggestions for Thai Side Dishes

I’m hosting a small dinner party soon and will be making a couple of Thai curries. I plan to serve them with plain steamed rice, but I’d love to add one or two more simple side dishes.

Does anyone have recommendations for tasty side options? I’m looking for dishes that don’t include rice and can ideally be prepared ahead of time. Thank you!

  1. That sounds like a lovely dinner party! Here are a few Thai side dish suggestions that are easy to prepare in advance and will complement your curries well:

    1. Thai Green Papaya Salad (Som Tum): This bright and refreshing salad is made with shredded green papaya, cherry tomatoes, green beans, peanuts, and a tangy dressing of lime juice, fish sauce, and tamarind. You can prepare the salad several hours ahead and toss in the dressing just before serving.

    2. Cucumber Salad (Ajad): A simple mix of sliced cucumbers, red onions, and carrots dressed with a sweet and tangy vinegar-based dressing – this salad adds a nice crunch and balances the richness of the curries.

    3. Thai Spring Rolls: Fresh or fried spring rolls filled with vegetables, shrimp, or tofu make for a great appetizer. You can prepare the filling and roll them in advance; just fry them shortly before serving or serve fresh with a dipping sauce.

    4. Spicy Thai Chicken Wings: Marinate chicken wings in a mix of garlic, fish sauce, lime juice, and chili, then bake or grill them. They can be made a few hours ahead and are easy to reheat before serving.

    5. Grilled Vegetables: A platter of grilled veggies like eggplant, bell peppers, zucchini, and mushrooms tossed with a little soy sauce and sesame oil can be prepared ahead and served at room temperature.

    6. Tom Yum Soup: A light and fragrant soup with shrimp or tofu, lemongrass, lime leaves, and mushrooms. It can be made in advance and reheated just before serving.

    7. Thai Pickled Vegetables: A mix of pickled carrots, radishes, and other veggies can provide a nice contrast to your curries. Prepare them a day or two ahead to allow the flavors to develop.

All of these options should pair beautifully with your Thai curries and can be made in advance, making your dinner party prep a bit easier. Enjoy your dinner party!
