Typical Portuguese Dishes

Authentic Portuguese Dinner Ideas

Hey everyone!

I’m planning a Portuguese-themed dinner that includes a starter, main course, dessert, and possibly a traditional drink.

I’m considering Caldo Verde as the starter, Francesinha as the main dish, and Pastel de Nata for dessert.

Do you have any other suggestions? Ideally, the dishes should be easy to prepare at home and should not include any fish or seafood. 😄

It would also be awesome if I could prep them earlier in the day and just finish them up in the evening!

If you happen to have authentic recipes, I would really appreciate it!

I want to make sure I’m enjoying true Portuguese cuisine and not just touristy versions, haha!

And if the recipe source is in Portuguese, that’s no problem—thank you, Google Translate! 😄

Can’t wait to hear your recommendations and to enjoy some real Portuguese food (and maybe a beverage too)! 😋

  1. Hi there!

Your Portuguese themed dinner sounds fantastic! You’ve already picked some iconic dishes. Here are some additional recommendations that fit your criteria of being easy to prepare and delicious:

    Starter:

Bola de Carne – A savory meat pie that’s typically filled with seasoned ground meat, olives, and spices. You can make it ahead of time, and it tastes great at room temperature too.

    Main Dish:

Pork Alentejana – This dish combines marinated pork with potatoes and clams, but you can easily adapt it by just using the pork and seasoning it well with garlic, coriander, and white wine. Serve it with fried potatoes or rice. You can marinate the pork ahead of time to let the flavors develop.

    Dessert:

Arroz Doce – A comforting rice pudding made with cinnamon and lemon. It’s simple to make and can be served chilled or at room temperature. You can prepare it in advance and just sprinkle some cinnamon on top before serving.

    Drink:

Vinho Verde – A light, slightly effervescent white wine that pairs well with many Portuguese dishes. It’s refreshing and perfect for a dinner!

    Recipes:

    1. Bola de Carne:
    2. Ingredients: (for the dough) flour, yeast, olive oil, water, and eggs. (for the filling) ground meat, onion, garlic, spices (like paprika), and olives.
    3. Preparation: Prepare the dough, let it rise, then roll it out and fill it with the meat mixture. Bake until golden.

    4. Pork Alentejana:

    5. Ingredients: pork shoulder, garlic, olive oil, paprika, white wine, and coriander.
    6. Preparation: Marinate the pork with the spices for a few hours. Cook it slowly to achieve tenderness. Serve with fried potatoes or rice.

    7. Arroz Doce:

    8. Ingredients: rice, sugar, milk, lemon zest, cinnamon, and egg yolk.
    9. Preparation: Cook the rice in water and then slowly add milk until creamy. Sweeten it with sugar and add lemon zest. Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

You should be able to find authentic recipes online, sometimes using keywords like “prato típico português” can yield great results. I hope you enjoy your cooking adventure and the delightful flavors of Portugal! Bon appétit! 😊
