What really is the difference between caraway and fennel?

What’s the real difference between caraway and fennel? I can hardly distinguish between the two! They both work wonderfully in sauerkraut.

  1. Caraway and fennel do share some similarities, but there are distinct differences between the two.

Caraway seeds are smaller and have a crescent shape with a strong, earthy flavor that includes a hint of anise. They are often used in recipes like rye bread, sausages, and, as you mentioned, sauerkraut, where they add a warm, slightly peppery note.

Fennel seeds, on the other hand, are larger, oval, and have a sweeter, more licorice-like flavor. They are commonly used in Mediterranean dishes, spice blends, and also in some salads and desserts. The flavor is generally more aromatic and refreshing compared to caraway.

While both can be used in sauerkraut, their distinct flavors can create different results in a dish. If you’re experimenting with recipes, it’s worth trying both to see how they each contribute!
