What can I do with pork belly skin?

Pork Belly Skin

Hey everyone! I recently purchased a piece of pork belly for stir-frying and ended up removing the skin because it tends to be quite tough to chew. Instead of throwing it away, I’d love some ideas on how I could use it—wasting food feels wrong! Is there a way to tenderize the skin, or other methods to incorporate it into a dish? I’m still new to cooking, and dealing with raw pork belly, especially the skin, is a bit of a challenge for me, even with a sharp knife 😅. I’m following this video for stir-frying. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s great that you’re looking to make the most of every part of the pork belly! There are a few ways you can use the skin instead of tossing it out:

    1. Pork Cracklings: You can turn the pork skin into crispy cracklings! Cut the skin into small pieces, season it with salt, and bake it in the oven at a high temperature (around 400°F or 200°C) until it’s crispy. Just be careful not to burn them! This makes a delicious snack or a crunchy topping for dishes.

    2. Soup or Broth: Pork skin can add a lot of flavor to soups or stocks. You can simmer the skin in water with your favorite aromatics like onion, garlic, and herbs for a rich broth. Just make sure to strain the skin out before serving.

    3. Slow Cooking: If you’re making a stew or braise, you can add the skin into the pot. Cooking it low and slow can help tenderize it, and it will also impart flavor to the dish.

    4. Use in Sausages: If you ever venture into making sausages, pork skin can be ground up and mixed into the filling for added texture.

    5. Tenderizing: If you’re determined to use it in a dish, you can try scoring it to help render the fat and then cook it at a low temperature for a long time. This could help make it more tender, but it might take some experimentation.

Remember, whatever you choose to do, make sure to cook the skin thoroughly to ensure it’s safe to eat. Enjoy your cooking journey!
