Wild Caught Porgies: How Long Can They Be Stored in the Refrigerator?

I recently purchased some wild caught porgies from the supermarket. The fishmonger, who was relatively new, mentioned that keeping them for more than 2 or 3 days might not be ideal. I bought mine on the 3rd day, but I’m unsure about the signs of spoilage in fish. What should I look out for?

  1. Wild caught porgies can typically be stored in the fridge for up to 1-2 days after purchase if they are fresh. Since you bought them on the 3rd day, it’s best to check for signs of spoilage before cooking or consuming them. Here are some indicators of fresh fish versus spoiled fish:

    1. Smell: Fresh fish should have a mild, briny scent. If it smells overly fishy or has a sour odor, it is likely spoiled.

    2. Appearance: Look for clear, bright eyes and shiny, opaque skin. If the eyes are cloudy or sunken, or if the skin looks dull or slimy, that’s a sign of deterioration.

    3. Texture: Press the flesh gently with your finger. It should be firm and bounce back. If it feels mushy or leaves an indentation, it’s best to discard it.

    4. Color: Fresh porgies should have vibrant, even coloring. Any discoloration, dark spots, or drying out at the edges can indicate spoilage.

If you’re unsure, it’s always safer to err on the side of caution and throw it out. If you plan to keep fish for more than a couple of days, freezing it is a good option.
