Is there any way of salvaging bad pre-packaged cake?

Is there any way to rescue a disappointing pre-packaged cake?

I recently visited an international deli and, in an effort to meet the credit minimum, I picked up a pre-packaged lamington when a cake craving hit. I knew the quality might not be great, but I was still hopeful. Unfortunately, it turned out to be quite dry—not at all soft or moist as I had imagined. I can only assume that in the realm of Hostess and Entenmann’s, there are plenty of creative suggestions for dealing with stale cakes. I’m thinking along the lines of how old bread can be transformed into French toast or bread pudding, though I feel those options might not suit this particular cake.

Also, I’d like to mention that while I understand many people recommend composting, feeding pets, or tossing food away, I really dislike food waste and would rather find a way to make this dry cake enjoyable. Any ideas for how to make it taste better?

  1. There are definitely ways to salvage dry pre-packaged cake and make it more enjoyable without resorting to food waste! Here are some ideas you could try:

    1. Cake Trifle: Layer the dry cake with some fresh whipped cream, custard, and fruit to create a trifle. The moisture from the cream and fruit will help soak into the cake and revive its texture.

    2. Milk Soak: Lightly soak slices of the cake in milk (or a flavored milk like chocolate or almond) for a few seconds before serving. This can add moisture and make it easier to eat.

    3. Microwave Trick: Warm the cake in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds. The heat can soften the cake a little, and you can also serve it with a scoop of ice cream for added moisture and flavor.

    4. Frosting Rescue: If the cake can handle it, try adding a layer of frosting or glaze. This will not only enhance the flavor but also add some moisture to counteract the dryness.

    5. Cake Pops: Crumble the dry cake into a bowl, mix it with frosting or melted chocolate to form a dough-like consistency, then shape it into balls, dip them in chocolate, and let them set. This can be a fun way to transform the cake!

    6. Milkshake: Blend pieces of the cake with some ice cream and milk to make a cake-flavored milkshake. This can be a delicious way to utilize the dry cake and mask any dryness.

    7. Parfait: Layer the dry cake with yogurt and fruits in a glass to create a parfait. The yogurt will add moisture, and it will be a tasty breakfast or snack option.

Hopefully, one of these suggestions will help you make the most of your lamington! Enjoy!
