In a sealed container, if you see mold, do you throw the whole thing away or just cut it out?

In a sealed container, what do you do if you find mold? Do you throw it all away or just cut out the affected part? I’ve read that seeing mold means there are already spores spreading throughout, even if they’re not visible yet.

I was planning to use some portabella mushrooms, but I noticed mold on a few of them. My friends are saying it’s okay and that I could just cut off the moldy parts, but I’m opting to play it safe and buy a new pack.

What’s your approach?

I also want to avoid missing work over this, as my job isn’t very forgiving when it comes to calling out, whether you’re genuinely sick or not.

  1. When it comes to mold, it’s usually safer to err on the side of caution. Your friends might suggest cutting off the mold, but as you’ve read, mold can have spores that spread beyond what’s visible, especially in porous foods like mushrooms. In the case of mushrooms, if they’re showing mold, it’s generally a good idea to throw the whole pack away. It’s not worth the risk of potential illness, especially if you’re concerned about missing work.

If you don’t want to take the chance and you can afford to buy another pack, that’s definitely the safest route. Better to prioritize your health and peace of mind! Plus, avoiding any risk of getting sick means you won’t have to worry about any issues with work.
