Allergies: Catering a Party

Catering a Party with Dietary Restrictions

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to cater a friend’s summer event and I’m in need of some recipe ideas or inspiration for party dishes. There will be several guests with specific dietary restrictions and allergies, so I’m looking to create meals that everyone can enjoy.

Here are the dietary restrictions I need to keep in mind:

  • Almond allergy (possibly nuts in general)
  • Gluten intolerance
  • Lactose intolerance (I have this too)
  • Egg-free
  • Vegan
  • Allium allergy/intolerance (including onions, leeks, shallots, chives, and garlic)

I’d greatly appreciate any and all suggestions you may have! The more inclusive dishes I can prepare, the fewer overall I’ll need to make.

Thanks for your help!

  1. Hi there!

It sounds like you have quite the challenge ahead of you, but with a bit of creativity, you can definitely come up with some delicious and inclusive dishes! Here are some recipe ideas that can cater to the various dietary restrictions you mentioned:

    Appetizers:

    1. Stuffed Mini Peppers: Fill mini bell peppers with a mixture of quinoa, black beans, corn, diced tomatoes, cilantro, lime juice, and spices. They’re colorful and packed with flavor!

    2. Vegetable Platter with Hummus: Serve a variety of fresh veggies like carrots, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes with a homemade hummus made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, and cumin (just avoid garlic).

    3. Caprese Skewers: Use cherry tomatoes and vegan mozzarella (or cubes of marinated tofu) on skewers, drizzled with balsamic glaze for flavor.

    Main Dishes:

    1. Quinoa Salad: Combine quinoa with diced cucumbers, bell peppers, parsley, a squeeze of lemon, and olive oil. You can also add chickpeas for extra protein.

    2. Vegan Chili: Prepare a hearty chili using a mix of beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, corn, and spices. Just make sure no recipe includes meat or dairy.

    3. Zucchini Noodles with Pesto: Spiralize zucchini and top with a nut-free basil pesto made from herbs, nutritional yeast, olive oil, and lemon.

    Side Dishes:

    1. Roasted Seasonal Vegetables: Toss a mix of seasonal veggies like carrots, zucchini, and bell peppers in olive oil and herbs, then roast until tender.

    2. Couscous Salad: Use gluten-free couscous (e.g., made from rice or corn) mixed with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and a simple vinaigrette.

    Desserts:

    1. Chia Seed Pudding: Make a chia pudding with almond milk (or any non-dairy milk), sweetener, and vanilla. Top it with fresh fruit and nuts, if there are no allergies.

    2. Fruit Salad: A simple and refreshing option! Mix your favorite fruits and consider adding a squeeze of lime for extra zest.

    Beverages:

    • Offer infused water with fruit and herbs for a refreshing drink option.
    • Consider a non-dairy iced coffee or tea for something more indulgent.

Make sure to label everything clearly, and consider preparing items in advance to reduce stress on the day of the event. Good luck with the catering, and I hope your friend’s event is a hit!
