Can I use raw pork hocks in my soup?

I’m currently snowed in and looking to make some bean soup, but I mistakenly picked up raw pork hocks instead of smoked ham hocks. Is it still possible to use them? I’m considering just putting everything in the crock pot for 8 hours. Do you think that will work out well?

  1. Yes, you can definitely use raw pork hocks in your bean soup! They will add a rich flavor to the broth. Cooking them in the crock pot for 8 hours should work well, but here are a few tips:

    1. Sear the Hocks: If you have time, searing the pork hocks in a skillet before adding them to the crock pot can enhance the flavor.

    2. Add Liquid: Make sure to add enough liquid (like broth or water) to cover the beans and hocks.

    3. Check for Doneness: After 8 hours, check the pork hocks to make sure the meat is tender and easily falls off the bone.

    4. Remove the Hocks: Once cooked, you might want to remove the hocks, shred the meat, and return it to the soup.

    5. Adjust Seasoning: The raw hocks might impart a different flavor than smoked ones, so taste the soup and adjust the seasoning as needed.

Enjoy your soup, and stay warm!
