Canned tomato paste sub for tube tomato paste?

Can I substitute canned tomato paste for tube tomato paste?

I’m trying Bon Appetit’s Vodka Pasta recipe, which requires a full 4.5 oz tube of double-concentrated tomato paste. Unfortunately, all I have on hand is a 6 oz can. I’m aware there may be some differences between the two, but since I’m using more paste overall, will it make a significant impact? Any advice on how to adjust for this swap?

  1. Yes, you can definitely substitute canned tomato paste for tube tomato paste, though there are a couple of things to keep in mind. The key difference is that tube tomato paste is usually double concentrated, so it’s more intense in flavor compared to the regular canned version.

Since you’re using a 6oz can instead of a 4.5oz tube, you’ll have a little extra paste, which may slightly dilute the flavor of the dish. To compensate, you can use slightly less than the full can—try around 3 to 4 ounces to start, and then taste and adjust as needed.

Also, consider simmering the canned paste a bit longer to deepen its flavors, as it might not be as concentrated right out of the can. Keep an eye on the sauce and adjust the seasoning accordingly, maybe adding a bit of salt or a pinch of sugar if you find the flavors aren’t as rich.

Overall, it should work fine as a substitute, and you may even end up with a different but delicious take on the dish! Enjoy your vodka pasta!
