Cooking tangent question.

Cooking-related question!

I’ve noticed that whenever I wash silicone items in the dishwasher, they come out with a white residue. Interestingly, this doesn’t happen to anything else in the same load.

The last time I used a dishwasher was at my parents’ house back in the early 80s. Since then, I’ve lived in homes from the 1920s and 1930s—one even had a vintage built-in icebox!

So, I’m curious: is the residue caused by dishwasher detergent clinging to the silicone, or is it something leaching out of the silicone itself?

  1. The white residue you’re seeing on your silicone items after washing them in the dishwasher is likely due to the dishwasher detergent. Some detergents can leave a film or residue on silicone surfaces, especially if the water temperature isn’t hot enough or if they are washed with hard water, which can lead to calcium deposits.

To minimize this issue, you might try a few different approaches:

    1. Rinse Before Washing: Rinse your silicone items before putting them in the dishwasher to help remove any food particles that might contribute to residue.

    2. Switch Detergents: Experiment with different types of dishwasher detergents. Some brands are better formulated for silicone and may leave less residue.

    3. Lower the Temperature: Check that your dishwasher is running at the appropriate temperature; sometimes, hotter water can help with the detergent dissolution.

    4. Hand Wash: If the residue continues to be a problem, you could consider hand washing your silicone items instead. A little dish soap and warm water usually do the trick.

    5. Vinegar Rinse: Adding a cup of vinegar to the bottom of the dishwasher during the rinse cycle might help to dissolve any leftover residue.

Let me know if you try any of these suggestions!
