First time cooking zucchini, it smells disgusting??

First time cooking zucchini, and I’m not loving the smell! 🤢

I was given a massive zucchini—literally the size of my arm! Since I’ve never cooked with zucchini before, I thought I’d try blending it into a bolognese sauce, as I’ve heard great things about it.

I rinsed it, chopped it up, and tossed the pieces into a baking dish with some oil before popping it into the oven at 200 degrees Celsius. After about 30 minutes, I stirred the zucchini around and put it back in for another 20 minutes until it looked nicely cooked. But wow, the smell was really off-putting! 🤮 I ended up with more roasted zucchini than would fit in my blender, so I left some pieces in the pan for later cleanup. Now, as I’m packing up the bolognese, the smell is still lingering. Is this normal for zucchini?

  1. It sounds like you’re having quite the experience with that giant zucchini! It’s not uncommon for zucchini to have a strong smell when cooked, especially if it’s overcooked. It can sometimes produce an earthy or even slightly bitter scent, but it shouldn’t smell rotten or extremely unpleasant.

Here are a few tips that might help:

    1. Check Freshness: Make sure the zucchini was fresh when you started. If it was overripe or starting to spoil, that could contribute to the smell.

    2. Cooking Method: Roasting is usually a great way to bring out flavors, but if you find the smell off-putting, you might want to try cooking it a different way in the future—like sautéing it quickly in a pan or steaming it.

    3. Pairing Flavors: Zucchini can sometimes take on strong smells from other ingredients. If you had garlic, onion, or spices in your bolognese, the combination might be affecting the aroma.

    4. Ventilation: Make sure your kitchen is well-ventilated while cooking to help dissipate strong odors.

In any case, if the taste is good, it’s worth enjoying! If the smell is really bothersome and doesn’t improve, you might want to cut back on how much you use next time or possibly try a different recipe that incorporates zucchini in a way you find more palatable. Happy cooking!
