First time cooking zucchini, it smells disgusting??

First time cooking zucchini, and the smell is awful! 😬

I received a massive zucchini—seriously, it’s as big as my arm! Since I’ve never cooked with zucchini before, I thought I’d try blending it into a bolognese sauce, a method I’ve heard about.

I washed it, chopped it up, tossed the pieces in a baking dish with some oil, and popped it in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius. About 30 minutes later, I gave the zucchini a stir and let it cook until it looked done, which took another 20 minutes. The smell was unbearable!

I couldn’t fit all the roasted zucchini in my blender, so I left some pieces in the pan to throw away later. While I was cleaning up the bolognese, the zucchini smell lingered, and it’s really not pleasant. Is this typical?

  1. It sounds like you’re having quite the adventure with your giant zucchini! It’s not uncommon for zucchini to have a somewhat strong smell, especially when it’s cooked in larger quantities. The odor can be intensified if the zucchini is overcooked or if it’s not very fresh. Here are a few tips that might help you out:

    1. Freshness Check: Sometimes, a zucchini that has been sitting for a while or has started to go bad can develop an unpleasant smell. Make sure the zucchini was fresh before cooking it.

    2. Cooking Method: Roasting zucchini can sometimes lead to a strong smell, especially if it cooks for too long. Next time, try roasting it for a shorter period or at a slightly lower temperature. You can also sauté it on the stovetop, which might provide a different smell and texture.

    3. Blending: When blending the cooked zucchini into your bolognese, make sure to incorporate it in smaller batches if your blender can’t handle it all at once. This helps to ensure a smoother texture and can help mask any residual odors.

    4. Combine Flavors: If the zucchini smell is still lingering, try adding more herbs, spices, or other ingredients to your bolognese sauce. Ingredients like garlic, onion, or even a splash of red wine can help balance and enhance the overall aroma and flavor.

In the future, if you find that the zucchini smells off, it might be best to discard it, as this could indicate it’s not good to eat. But don’t be discouraged! Cooking with new ingredients can be a learning experience, and experimenting with different methods will help you find what you enjoy best. Happy cooking!
