French starter/dessert recipes

French Starter and Dessert Recipe Ideas Needed

Next Saturday, my in-laws are hosting a Six Nations viewing party, and each couple has been assigned a country to prepare a starter and dessert. We’ve drawn France (I was secretly hoping for Italy, as I have a plethora of Italian recipes!). I have a few ideas in mind, as I’m a moderately confident cook, but I would love to gather more suggestions! Some family members are not particularly adventurous when it comes to food, so sadly, snails are off the table (even though I personally love them and have cooked them before).

I could really use your help! The dishes I prepare will need to be made ahead of time and transported about three miles by car, but they can be finished or reheated in their kitchen before serving. To give you an idea of what I’m already planning, I’m making gougères and crème brûlées. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

  1. That sounds like a fun challenge! Here are a couple of classic French starter and dessert suggestions that should appeal to your family and can be made ahead of time:

    Starters:

    1. Tarte Flambée (Flammekueche): This is a traditional Alsatian dish similar to a thin pizza topped with crème fraîche, onions, and lardons (or bacon). You can prepare the base and toppings ahead of time and bake it just before serving.

    2. Ratatoille Tart: A delicious vegetable tart made with layers of thinly sliced zucchini, eggplant, and bell peppers over a rich tomato sauce. You can create it in advance, refrigerate it, and then reheat it before serving.

    3. French Onion Soup: This classic dish can be made ahead and transported easily. Just reheat it at your in-laws’ place and serve it with toasted bread and melted cheese on top.

    Desserts:

    1. Tarte Tatin: This upside-down caramelized apple tart can be made in advance and tastes even better the next day. It’s best served warm, so you can reheat it briefly before serving.

    2. Mousse au Chocolat: A rich chocolate mousse is always a hit and can be prepared the day before. Just whip it up, let it set in the fridge, and transport it in individual cups for easy serving.

    3. Madeleines: These delightful little sponge cakes can be flavored with lemon or orange zest. They can be made ahead and are perfect for a sweet bite alongside coffee or tea.

    Additional Tips:

    • For transport, consider using insulated containers to keep dishes warm, and bring along any garnishes (like fresh herbs or whipped cream) that can be added just before serving.
    • Given that gougères are already on the menu, perhaps pairing them with a simple dip like herbed cream cheese or a classic French Aioli could be a nice touch!

Good luck, and enjoy the Six Nations!
