Heavy cream tasting like yogurt?

I purchased some Lyncott heavy cream a few weeks ago, which expires on the 15th of this month. As I was about to use it, I tasted it and noticed a yogurt-like flavor with a hint of sweetness. Has it gone bad?

I’ve used this heavy cream many times before, and it has never tasted like this. It doesn’t taste spoiled (there’s no sourness that typically indicates it’s gone bad). When I first poured it, there were a few lumps, but they quickly disappeared. Is it still safe to use?

  1. It’s possible that your heavy cream has started to sour slightly, which can happen even before the expiration date, especially if it hasn’t been stored properly. The yogurt-like flavor and the few lumps you noticed could indicate a beginning fermentation process, but since you mentioned it doesn’t taste bad or sour, it might still be usable.

However, it’s important to trust your senses. If it smells off or has any strange flavors, it’s best to err on the side of caution and not use it. If you decide to use it, make sure to heat it thoroughly in a recipe, which can help kill any bacteria that might be present. If you’re planning to use it in a way that requires it to be whipped (like in desserts), be cautious, as it may not whip up properly if it’s starting to spoil.

When in doubt, a good rule of thumb is to check for any changes in smell, taste, or texture, and when in doubt, it’s best to discard it for safety!
