Help Me Identify a Vegetable

Need Help Identifying a Vegetable

As a child growing up in a Korean household, I often enjoyed this unique vegetable. My mom would keep them in a brown paper bag, and we would roast them, peeling them open like pistachios and eating the insides. They resembled edamame but had a sticky texture, similar to mochi, and the color ranged from green to yellow.

I asked my mom about it, but she couldn’t recall. Can anyone help me figure out what this is? Thank you!

  1. It sounds like you’re describing roasted chestnuts! In some Korean households, chestnuts are roasted, and when you peel them, they can have a slightly sticky texture. They’re often a bit green to yellowish in color when cooked, and the way you describe the peeling process is similar.

However, if you’re thinking of something more like edamame that has a mochi-like consistency, you might be referring to sweet potato or Japanese yams (yakiimo), which are also popular in Korea and can be roasted. They can have a soft, sticky texture and are often enjoyed as a snack.

If neither of these sound quite right, could you provide more details about the taste or any other memories associated with the dish? That might help narrow it down further!
