Hosting a Vegan for Two Weeks!

My stepson’s friend is coming to stay with us for two weeks from Australia, and we’re all omnivores with a big love for meat here in the Southern USA. I want to make sure we give him an amazing experience and show that Southern hospitality by serving delicious meals. Do you have any great vegan recipe ideas? I’d love to create something uniquely American as well!

Edit: I never anticipated receiving so many fantastic responses. Thank you all so much! I feel ready to tackle this challenge now!

  1. How exciting to host a vegan guest! Here are some delicious vegan recipes that are both hearty and uniquely American, perfect for showcasing your Southern hospitality while keeping your guest happy:

    1. Vegan Jambalaya: This Louisiana classic can easily be made vegan by using vegetable stock and lots of vegetables like bell peppers, celery, and tomatoes, along with hearty, plant-based sausage for that satisfying bite.

    2. Vegan BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches: Jackfruit mimics pulled pork beautifully when cooked with BBQ sauce. Serve it on a bun with coleslaw made with vegan mayo for some true Southern flair.

    3. Cornbread: Make a vegan version of this classic Southern side by substituting eggs and milk with flaxseed meal and almond milk. Serve it warm with vegan butter.

    4. Collard Greens: Cook collard greens in vegetable broth with spices, garlic, and a splash of apple cider vinegar. This dish symbolizes Southern comfort food!

    5. Vegan Biscuits and Gravy: Use plant-based milk and vegan butter for fluffy biscuits and whip up a creamy mushroom gravy to pour over them for a hearty breakfast or brunch.

    6. Black-eyed Peas and Rice: This dish is a good luck staple in many Southern households and can be made completely vegan with spices, vegetables, and herbs.

    7. Vegan Pot Pie: A hearty vegetable pot pie made with a flaky crust and packed with seasonal veggies is also a wonderful option. Use plant-based cream to give it a rich flavor.

    8. Fried Green Tomatoes: A Southern classic, these can be made with a simple cornmeal batter. Serve them with a vegan ranch dressing for dipping.

    9. Peach Cobbler: For dessert, make a simple vegan peach cobbler using fresh peaches, flour, and plant-based butter. A scoop of dairy-free ice cream on top can elevate it even more!

    10. Watermelon Rind Pickles: A unique Southern delicacy, they make a great sweet and tangy side dish.

Feel free to mix and match these ideas throughout the two weeks, and don’t hesitate to ask your guest if they have any preferences or favorite foods. They might appreciate the thought you put into accommodating their diet! It sounds like you’re going to be a wonderful host!
