How to store Parmesan cheese?

Tips for Storing Parmesan Cheese
Hi everyone! I recently purchased a block of Parmesan cheese for a pasta dish. Should I freeze it to maximize its shelf life? Additionally, besides visible mold, how can I tell if it has gone bad? Right now, it’s wrapped in plastic and was packaged on March 1st, with a sell-by date of March 22nd. Thanks!

  1. When it comes to storing Parmesan cheese, it’s generally best to keep it in the refrigerator rather than the freezer, as freezing can change its texture and flavor. Here are some tips on how to store it properly:

    1. Keep it Wrapped: Since your Parmesan is currently wrapped in plastic, that’s a good start. However, for longer storage, consider wrapping it in parchment paper or wax paper first, then covering it with plastic wrap or placing it in an airtight container. This helps to balance moisture and prevents it from drying out.

    2. Refrigeration: Store the cheese in the fridge, ideally in the cheese compartment if your refrigerator has one. The ideal temperature is around 34-38°F (1-3°C).

    3. Freezing: If you do want to extend its shelf life significantly, you can freeze Parmesan cheese. Grate or shred it before freezing, as this makes it easier to use later. Just keep in mind that the texture may change when thawed, so it’s best used in cooked dishes.

    4. Checking Freshness: Besides visible mold, use your senses to determine if the cheese has gone bad. Smell it; if it has an off or sour odor, it’s likely spoiled. Additionally, if the cheese feels excessively hard or has changed in color, it may be time to discard it.

As for the sell-by date, Parmesan can still be good for a while past that date if stored properly, so trust your senses!

    Enjoy your pasta-making!
