I bought “bad” shrimp, can I use them for anything?

I accidentally bought some “bad” shrimp—what can I do with them?

Today, I tried cooking a bag of frozen shrimp for the first time. After boiling them for about 10 minutes, they still looked semi-translucent and had a rubbery texture.

After doing some research, I found out that shrimp treated with tripolyphosphate don’t behave like regular shrimp when cooked. Awesome.

They definitely aren’t tasty, and now I’m stuck with a whole bag of them. Is there anything I can salvage, or should I just throw them away?

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your experience with the shrimp! If the shrimp are treated with tripolyphosphate, they might not have the best texture, but there are still ways to use them rather than tossing them out. Here are a few ideas:

    1. In Stews or Soups: You can use the shrimp in a flavorful stew or soup where they will be combined with other ingredients. The broth can help mask the less appealing texture.

    2. Shrimp Fried Rice: Sauté them with rice, vegetables, and soy sauce. The flavors will help improve their taste, and the texture may not be as noticeable.

    3. Shrimp Tacos: Season and cook them with spices, and then serve them in tacos with fresh toppings like salsa, avocado, and lime. The added flavors will enhance their appeal.

    4. Pasta Dish: Toss them with a flavorful sauce, like garlic and butter or a tomato-based sauce, alongside other ingredients. The sauce can help cover the texture.

    5. Casserole: Incorporate them into a shrimp casserole with other ingredients that can help add flavor and moisture.

    6. Smoothies: If you’re open to experimenting, you could even blend the shrimp into a seafood smoothie or dip.

If none of these options appeal to you, it might be best to err on the side of caution and dispose of them for your health and safety. Sometimes, it’s not worth the risk of consuming something that seems off.
