I have 1/2 pound of ground beef and I’m wondering if that’s too little to make Bolognese sauce. I’m looking for a recipe that will hold up well for a few days. Can anyone suggest how to adapt a traditional Bolognese recipe to work with just 1/2 pound of beef?

i only have 1/2lb of ground beef. is that too little to make bolognes?

You can definitely make a small batch of Bolognese with 1/2 lb of ground beef! Bolognese sauce is quite flexible, and it can still be delicious even in smaller quantities. Here’s a simple way to adapt the recipe:
- Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb ground beef
- 1/2 small onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 carrot, finely chopped
- 1/2 celery stalk, finely chopped (optional)
- 1-2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup crushed tomatoes (or 1/2 can)
- A splash of red wine (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- A pinch of dried herbs (like oregano or basil)
- Olive oil for cooking
-
Optional: Milk or cream (about 1-2 tablespoons) for richness
-
Instructions:
- Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté until softened (about 5 minutes).
- Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
- Pour in the splash of red wine (if using) and let it evaporate for a minute.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes and herbs, then reduce the heat to low.
- Let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes, adding a bit of water or broth if it gets too thick.
- If using, stir in the milk or cream towards the end.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
This should yield enough sauce to serve with pasta for a couple of meals! It keeps well in the refrigerator for a few days and can also be frozen if you want to save some for later. Enjoy your cooking!
