Is there any difference, in cooking time between Mutton Chops/cutlets and Lamb chops/cutlets

Is there a difference in cooking times between mutton chops and lamb chops? I’m familiar with cooking lamb chops but haven’t tried mutton chops yet. Any tips on how long to cook them?

  1. Yes, there is a difference between mutton chops and lamb chops when it comes to cooking times, primarily due to the age of the meat.

Lamb comes from younger sheep, typically under one year old, while mutton comes from older sheep (over one year old). As a result, mutton can be tougher and may require longer cooking times to become tender.

For lamb chops, you generally want to cook them for about 4-6 minutes per side for medium-rare on a medium-high grill or pan.

For mutton chops, you might want to increase the cooking time to about 6-8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the chops and the desired doneness. Also, consider a longer cooking method, such as braising or slow cooking, which can help tenderize the meat while developing richer flavors.

Always check the internal temperature for doneness: 145°F (63°C) for lamb and 160°F (71°C) for mutton. Enjoy your cooking!
